Species Preservation & Water Infrastructure 3D Model

Truckee Basin Conservation Effort

The goal of Farmers Conservation Alliance, or FCA Solutions, was to engineer a fish friendly infrastructure that bypassed the Derby Dam in Nevada. The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout population, severely affected by the Derby Dam, had been on the endangered species list for nearly 50 years. FCA Solution’s wanted to have an intuitive display that clearly communicated their conservation-based innovation for the Truckee Basin, and offered more insight into their engineering workflow.

With such complex engineering, the best way to showcase FCA’s Famers Screen design was with two separate models. One was an overview of the full site, showing how water and fish safely flow through their system. The second vignette model acted as an engineering section display that highlighted gate and water flow functionality. This set of models was then brought to public comment meetings and the ribbon cutting ceremony.

“I just wanted to send a huge thanks for all of your work (and LGM as a whole) on the physical models for Derby Dam. The groundbreaking went off without a hitch yesterday. The models were pivotal to telling the story of this project and were essentially a centerpiece of the entire day. Many were blown away by accuracy and level of detail in the model.” Dan Kaler | Staff Engineer, FCA Solutions
